I WAS GIFTED A GENERIC SERGER. A MINILOCK FR 855L. DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE ONE, A USER MANUAL, OR KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A MANUAL? I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO BEGIN. IS THIS A COPYCAT OF A NAME BRAND SERGER? IF SO, MAYBE I CAN USE IT'S MANUAL. I THINK IT IS A JAPANESE MADE MACHINE, ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED. I AM NEW TO THE SEWING GAME. THANKS.

Hi, I also just received one from a friend. I am also looking for a manual. I did manage to thread it by following the instructions on the inside and I tried it out and was surprised that it worked so well but I need to know how to use it correctly. So did anyone get back to you about the manual if so could you please let me know via email

I have a mini lock FR-852L. Purchased new 23 years ago and have never had any trouble other then threading and forgetting how to ... the manual has no address for the company, no manufacture name..... nada BUT.... in the old pattti brown serger book, (paperback blue cover) it says it is made by king distributing.

sewtea, is King really the manufacturer or just the distributor? I think that Yamata Feiyue made some Mini lock sergers and they looked much to be like the very old first Babylock models.

Waaaay back when I purchased I was told the Babylock feet etc would fit my serger. King manufacturer is who developed for home use according to the paperback 'Sewing with sergers', Gail brown patti palmer page 11 botom paragraph. Was also told that Juki was maker but salesman... who really knows?....I don't have a working printer to scan for you. I am surprised know one else has said they have this. you need the manual for the threading and setting tensions, at least that is how I get it together.

I have this goofy interest for who makes sewing machines LOL and sometime back somebody posted about one of these mini sergers and I did a search and found some info on Yamata and Feiyu. I also thought how much these mini's look like the first Babylocks..(that Juki made). Juki Japan did make the Babylock models from the very first as stated in the book Know Your Babylock where there is a little history given on the beginning of home sergers. Juki designed the first home serger 'the baby' in 1967 after their larger industrial models. Tacony Corp. marketed the Baby and has always had exclusive distribution rights for Babylock.
The different models of BL sergers over the years took several types of needles as did my old Babylock. It was one of the first sergers with differntial feed and it took a round shank industrial type needle. There are also several types of these needles which are really hard to insert correctly. The Babylock book does show pictures of the older models and graphs of what their features were and the different types of needles each took. Some of the tension knobs on those older models were a bit horrific taking multiple revolutions of the knobs to change the tensions where some models were single revolution.
I highly recommend the older Know Your Babylock book for all models of sergers because of the hints given for the use on any serger. I have the Sewing with Sergers book that you posted about and also many newer books with all the lovely pictures etc. but this Know Your Babylock book by Naomi Baker/Tammy Young remains my favorite. It tells how to do many things one would not dream of doing with a serger and can be done on any serger quite easily.

I agree. I have an old sewing with nancy video for sergers because her pfaff (sp) reminded me of my mini lock. But the old books have similar looking machines to the mini lock and great info.
